Today, Citizens for Safe Water Around Badger (CSWAB) joined the Wisconsin Resources Protection Council, Sierra Club, and over 75 statewide, regional and national groups in releasing an open letter urging Wisconsin legislators to reject changes to Wisconsin’s mining safeguards. The action marks the beginning of a new network of organizations working to protect the state’s water resources and opposing the reintroduction of the Iron Mining bill (2011 AB 426) and the proposed repeal of Wisconsin’s common sense Mining Moratorium Law.  The Iron Mining bill would exempt the mining of ferrous (iron ore) minerals from the state’s current metallic mining law, opening the door for an open-pit strip mine proposed for the Bad River Watershed which would be the largest taconite mine in the world.
